Merchant Account
The Merchant Account is basically a "license" that simply shows that you meet all of the requirements to accept credit cards online (ie.. satisfactory credit history, business banking account, etc...). The Merchant Account is directly connected through a Processing Gateway to the various credit card companies of your choice and also to your business banking account so that it can deposit the income from transactions there quickly.
THE APPLICATION PROCESS
In order to have the ability to conduct credit card transactions online, you MUST be approved and own an internet capable MERCHANT ACCOUNT.

UNDERSTANDING THE FEES
Once you have established a Merchant Account and is is attached to a Processing Gateway, you are ready to accept credit cards. There are some fees associated with having a Merchant Account.

2.30% + 30 cents per transaction (credit card company fee)
There is a minimum monthly charge of approximately $25. (ie., You will be charged either the calculated amount of the Discount Rate Fee or $25, whichever amount is greater).
There may be additional rates necessary for some authorization companies (CyberCash, etc..)
